Most people wonder at some point in their lives if there is a God.
Some do it when they have a child and witness new life coming into the world. Some do it when they look at nature and see the ingenuity all around – they can hardly imagine how it could all come about in that way. Some when they stand at the deathbed of a loved one and wonder if that was really all there was to it...
Does God exist? There was a time in my life when I would have answered that question with a resounding NO. You can't see God, you can't hear Him, and there is no scientific proof of Him.
But let's look at it from the other side: what if someone could prove God tomorrow? THAT would worry me. Then there would have to be some physical device with which we could measure Him, or some test procedure ... What kind of God would that be, so small and calculable?
Good thing it's not possible! The fact that you can't prove God doesn't exist doesn't speak AGAINST Him, it speaks FOR Him! Science does not answer our question about God. It can study His traces, but not Himself.
Most people in the world – and even most people in Europe – believe that there is 'something higher'. But how does that help us? Is God an impersonal, cosmic energy? Is He mystically present in nature and in all living things? Or is He a personal counterpart? Is God interested in us or not? Good or evil? One or many?
Our only chance of finding out about God is if He takes the first step and shows Himself to us in some way. And that would make us realise that He wants to have a relationship with us. I think He has done that – in the Bible. There, God is presented to us as a personal counterpart. As a God of opposites. On the one hand He is almighty, exalted, great and incorruptible. On the other hand, He is full of love and compassion. Jesus presents Him to us as a father because He is exactly what a loving, good father should be in the life of a child.
This is not an intellectual insight or a mental gimmick. It is about relationship. Someone once said, 'What good is ONE God if it's not YOUR God?'
God wants to relate to you. Maybe you can't imagine that now, maybe the idea even frightens you. But maybe God is very different from what you thought.
For me, my journey with God began with a simple prayer: "If You really exist, then let me know." This is not about asking for some sign to prove it. God is not someone we can tell how to show Himself. But if He is God, then He can communicate!
In my case, all my rejection of Him suddenly disappeared. From one moment to the next He had a place in my life. It was as if He was saying to me, 'Why are you fighting Me so much?' The Bible suddenly became very exciting to me. And I saw how it was working in my life.
Maybe it's the same for you. I am convinced that He will give an answer to anyone who sincerely seeks Him. Maybe in a different way than we thought. But still in a way that creates a certainty that grows more and more the more we get to know Him.
My life is no longer the same. For me, God is a personal Being whom I trust. My Father in heaven.
Who is God? Don't leave this question unanswered in your life!
